we have restored well over a half a million customers in this going no a fifth day. >> reporter: today july 4th, the work doesn't stop for the guys. >> no. there is no holiday for bge. there are contractors out here with us. everybody will be work 1 to 16 hour days. some -- 12 to 16 hour days. at the end of the day, we want to bet everybody restored. we have 4,000 folks in total we brought in in a short period of time 4,000 you are seeing today and similar facility in lockheed martin. we are talking about 1300 contractors out therefrom as far as quebec and texas and florida. >> reporter: you are keeping a close eye on the radar looking at approaching storms. what could storms do to power restoration efforts. >> depends on what it is. if a storm comes through that's similar to the other night where we lost 12,000 customers, it is going to have an effect. and cumulus effect. if you lose several thousand

customers at a time, and depending where it is, you could see the restoration process elongate. we will worry about that part. we are making sure we are doing the goal at hard and trying to restore all power by the end of the weekend. >> reporter: we are going on day 6 of people are without power. the frustration levels i am sure are rising. starting today willy gave better eye did he what the -- will you be able to get a-- give a better eye did he when the power will be on. >> when we have eyes on the problem and a crew working a job and they believe they can fix it and restore it by a certain period of time we will on a limited basis with high confidence in the job provide the information but only where we know the job is going to get done he don't want to seat expectations to miss it and to upset or frustration customers further.

update. you see the contractors reporting but we will stay posted and let you know on the progress continuing throughout the morning. live in linthicum, linda so abc2 news. we have been tracking the area around stephenson lane in towson. those residents are in the dark for four days. that was until last night when the lights finally came back on. about 500bge customers are waking up to cooler homes today. about 3,000 customers running off separate system but in the air same yeah they are expected to come back online later today. -- in the same area, they are expected to come online today. >> we saw the lights and we screamed. >> some customers have power has gone back off after being restored. bge says it has a temporary outage while neighbors are be being restored. squad 11 in southeast baltimore and truck 15 were supposed to close up sunday

when the storm hit. that was on friday night. they stayed online. now they have been moved further ahead now they are set to close on monday, july 9th. >> absolutely. on tuesday the city extended their stay until monday july 9th. something to keep in mind. head to abc2news.com if you want more information. downtown baltimore will be buzzing with thousands of people ready to celebrate independence day. and they will be doing it with a fireworks display but city ofixes say they have been -- officials say they have been working all week to prepare for the large number of people. >> to not have a repeat of last year sherrie johnson is here on what's being done to keep 2000,000 -- 200,000 people. >> reporter: tonight is the huge night for the fireworks display. city police are expecting a large crowd for the festivities and they say they are ready. after the celebration last year, a man was stabbed to death with a broken bottle on pier 5 and a 4-year-old boy walking with his father was

shot in the leg. this year, baltimore police say they have a new plan in place to make sure it is safe for people to come and celebrate the 4th at the inner harbor. they will use a perimeter fence made up of bike racks about waist high and closing the inner harbor air yo to control the crowd and they will watch the crowds in realtime using city watch cameras and fox trots. >> we wish people would be adult and conduct themselves the right way. when they don't, of course we will do our jobs. >> reporter: now police expect more than 200,000 people to flood the harbor for the fireworks show tonight ten times the size of the new year's evecrowd and for everything you and your family need to know, head to our website at abc2news.com. we have a list of all the fireworks where they are going to be located and what times they start on the home page. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. one family celebration ended up in a disaster. >> coming in a bit, what happened during an annual

now "good morning maryland." around the nation this morning, several people were hurt on tuesday in new hampshire because of the fireworks that went off on a back deck of the home. house was filled with smoke when crews arrived. 30 people were in the home. 9 people including 3 kin were taken to the hospital. neighbors say the owner of the home put on a large fireworks displayy year. a tv helicopter spotted this story of a dog running along the shoulder of a chicago interstate. they ran down the expressway and got off on an exit and ran into a neighborhood what resident was able to grab the pooch. now, the microchip in the dog showed he was from a mill in iowa. aside from dehydration and exhaustion, it is in good health. traffic officials are warning watch your speeds and stops on roadways today.
